Massachusetts-based robotics company, AutoGuide Mobile Robots, digs into Appalachia mining communities to fill labor shortages and position dislocated coal miners for future career success. AutoGuide’s manufacturing facility, located in Georgetown, Kentucky, recently hired several coal miners and plans on continuing these hiring practices for several years.
AutoGuide tapped into the mining workforce, widely recognized for mechanical competence, work ethics, and problem-solving skills. The robot powerhouse has seen immediate impacts from the production line to the bottom-line.
According to AutoGuide CEO, Rob Sullivan, “As a central Kentucky employer, we had a difficult time finding candidates with the necessary skillsets. In the mines, electricians, mechanics, welders, and other technicians possessed exactly what we needed. In addition to exceptional mechanical and technical aptitude, generations of coal industry workers bring an extraordinary commitment and work ethic to this new opportunity. Kentucky has its own built-in workforce waiting to be unlocked and we are definitely pleased to be out front of this opportunity.”
With manufacturing unemployment at a 50-year low, below 3%, the growing demand for labor in the advanced manufacturing industry has never been stronger. Experienced coal miners are a highly skilled workforce and answer AutoGuide’s increasing production requirement.
Robots are not taking jobs away from Americans. To the contrary, AutoGuide and Appalachian coal miners are a perfect example of how robotic leaders repurpose precious skilled resources right here in America.
